This WAFB Check-Up segment aired in 2020 or 2021 if I remember correctly. Kylie Maris interviewed me about gait analysis and the Optogait system I previously used while working in the sports medicine department for Ochsner Baton Rouge. It's always tough to convey what a 90 minute visit involves in just 90 seconds! Hint: running only makes up about 10 minutes of this process. A full gait analysis involves a thorough training & injury history, running & data collecting, reviewing that data & combining it with physical exam findings, then formulating & teaching a treatment plan to help improve. The treatment plan can include training advice, strengthening / stretching / mobilizing exercises, running drills, form changes, nutrition recommendations, etc.
Wish I could have taken her through the full process, but of course they were more focused on getting the shots needed. Even without doing a full analysis, it was a great example of how much it helps to actually watch a runner RUN. The cause of her pain was obvious within a few seconds. Kylie enjoys running but had suffered from knee pain issue. She adopted a different running style that resolved her knee pain but caused issues in her feet.
How to fix it? Well that's where the other 80 minutes would really help. Also, the RunScribe wearable technology that I currently use with gait analysis would be a much better way to capture and measure changes in the form issues she needs to work on now.
